During Multifocal Lens Implants are placed in the eye following cataract surgery in order
to replace the eyes natural lens. Multifocal implant technology has revolutionized implant
surgery, allowing 85% of people to be free from glasses after the surgery, as compared to
only 30% of people using the older monofocal implant lenses. This level of success is
achievable because multifocal lenses are able to focus on objects that are both close
and far away, making it so you can easily read, drive, watch tv and any of your other
daily activities without the need for glasses.
How is a Multifocal Lens Implant Treatment Preformed?
Multifocal Lens Implants are inserted during a standard cataract surgery, an outpatient
procedure that usually only takes a few hours. Your eyes will be treated with a anesthetic,
and you will feel nothing during the procedure. After the anesthetic has taken effect, a
small incision will be made in the eye and a tiny instrument will be inserted through it.
This instrument gives off ultrasonic vibrations which will break up the cataract into
microscopic pieces which can then be sucked up into the instrument. Once the cataract has
been removed, the Mulifocal Lens Implant will be inserted through the incision and
placed on the eye. After the procedure you will be instructed by your surgeon on post
operative care for your eyes, which may include eye drops, protective shields you wear
at night and follow up visits. Generally your eyes will heal fast enough that you can
return to your normal routine within a day or two.
