Life After LASIK: What Patients Can Expect During Recovery and Beyond
For millions of people, glasses and contact lenses are part of daily life. If you prefer life without corrective lenses, LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) may be an excellent alternative.
But what happens afterward? How long does it take your eyes to heal? Are the changes permanent?
LASIK is one of our specialties at Marano Eye Care, a division of Ophthalmology New Jersey, with offices in Denville, Livingston, and Newark. We use the most advanced technology and treatments available to improve and preserve vision.
We also find that sometimes the most effective tool we have is communicating with our patients about what to expect before, during, and after a procedure.
While every case is different and results can vary, we’re happy to provide basic information about what you can expect after LASIK.
The first 24 hours
Most patients are pleasantly surprised by how quickly they notice an improvement in vision. Within just a few hours after LASIK, vision often becomes significantly clearer, though it may still appear slightly hazy or fluctuate as healing occurs.
Common sensations during the first day include:
- Mild burning or stinging
- Mild itchiness
- Light sensitivity
- Excess tearing
These symptoms are normal and typically resolve within 24-48 hours. We advise patients to rest their eyes, keep them closed as much as possible, and avoid screens on the day of surgery.
Protective eye shields should be worn while sleeping to prevent accidental rubbing.
The first week
During the first week, vision continues to sharpen and stabilize. Many patients return to work within one to three days, depending on their occupation.
Driving is often possible within a day or two, once vision meets legal standards. However, some temporary visual effects may occur:
- Halos around lights
- Glare at night
- Fluctuating clarity
- Mild dryness
Dry eye symptoms are especially common. The corneal nerves, which help regulate tear production, need time to regenerate. We prescribe eyedrops several times daily to maintain comfort and promote healing.
Follow-up visits, starting with a recheck two to three days after the procedure, are essential during this period. We encourage you to schedule and keep every appointment and follow postsurgical care instructions carefully to ensure proper healing and optimal visual outcomes.
The first month
By the one-month mark, most patients experience stable, crisp vision. Activities such as exercising, swimming (after approval), and wearing eye makeup can usually resume without restriction.
Dryness may persist in some individuals, particularly those with preexisting dry eye symptoms. Consistent use of lubricating drops and, in some cases, prescription treatments can help manage this phase.
Please do not use drops or other eye medications without express approval from your eye surgeon.
Night vision disturbances, such as halos or starbursts, generally diminish over time as the brain adapts to the new visual system. This neuroadaptation is a normal process and can take several weeks.
What to expect beyond recovery
LASIK corrects refractive errors such as nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism by permanently reshaping the cornea. For the vast majority of patients, results are long-lasting and stable.
However, it’s important to understand that LASIK does not prevent natural age-related changes. For instance, around age 40 and beyond, many individuals develop presbyopia, a normal condition that affects near vision.
Even patients with excellent LASIK outcomes may eventually need reading glasses to correct presbyopia.
Additionally, although LASIK reduces dependence on glasses or contacts, it does not eliminate the need for regular comprehensive eye exams.
Routine evaluations help monitor overall ocular health, detect conditions such as glaucoma or macular degeneration, and ensure lasting visual clarity.
Ready for the freedom offered by LASIK?
One of the most rewarding aspects of LASIK is the freedom it provides in your daily life. Patients often describe simple pleasures, such as waking up and seeing clearly, swimming without contacts, or traveling without spare lenses, as transformative.
