Common Types of Eye Allergies

Allergic Conjunctivitis

If you suffer from seasonal allergies, you’ve definitely experienced allergic reactions such as itchy, red, and watery eyes. While many would consider these occurrences as casual symptom of their allergies, the condition is actually professionally referred to as allergic conjunctivitis. Allergic conjunctivitis occurs when the membrane covering the inside of the eyelids and the eyeball – called the conjunctiva – becomes inflamed from airborne substances called allergens. Below are just a few of the airborne allergens that may be causing your allergic conjunctivitis:

  • Mold
  • Pollen
  • Dander
  • Dust
  • Smoke

Acute Allergic Conjunctivitis

At the height of allergy season, many patients experience various symptoms of eye irritation. The condition is known as acute allergic conjunctivitis and occurs when allergens are encountered in the air. Unfortunately, allergic reactions are not confined to the constraints of each individual season. They can occur all year round and cause sudden inflammation in the eyes from allergies to food, animal dander, or even dust. Sufferers of acute allergic conjunctivitis and associated eye allergies often have light sensitivity as well. Allergic conjunctivitis – both acute and regular – commonly develop in those with preexisting allergies. It’s also important to note that patients who do not have any known seasonal allergies may be using a contact lens or eye drop solution that contains a chemical causing an unfavorable reaction.

Allergy Skin Testing in New Jersey

An allergy skin test is always recommended to patients who’re experiencing symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis. This test will help determine what is causing your allergic reaction by small skin pricks with specific allergens to analyze a potential allergic response. Additional testing may include blood tests and conjunctival tissue samples to ensure the body has a high enough white blood cell count and is producing enough antibodies to protect against allergens. In more severe cases, Marano Eye Care will recommend OTC antihistamines, anti-inflammatory eye drops, eye drops to clear and reduce congested blood vessels, and steroidal eye drops. Once these allergens are correctly addressed, be sure to make these lifestyle changes to control the amount of potential allergens you’re exposed to:

  • Run an indoor air purifier
  • Change perfumes or cologne
  • Change soaps and other health and wellness products
  • Keep windows closed
  • Clean up pet hair and dander
