New Jersey Optical Coherence Tomography Test

At Marano Eye Care, we are proud to provide procedures and tests to evaluate your eye health and determine a treatment method perfectly suited to you. With the help of Dr. Matthew Marano and our team, you will be well on your way to improved vision and comfort on a day-to-day basis. One of the diagnostic imaging tests we offer at our locations in LivingstonNewark, and Denville is optical coherence tomography, also known as OCT. This quick and non-invasive test allows our doctors to evaluate the layers of the retina and their thickness in order to detect, diagnose, and eventually treat a variety of eye diseases and conditions

How Does OCT Work?

Ocular coherence tomography is an advanced imaging testing procedure performed on the retina of the eye. The test uses light waves to take pictures of your retina, creating a cross-section so our doctors can fully evaluate your eye. Reasons for OCT testing include monitoring the progress of an eye condition, evaluating potential issues with the retina that may be causing uncomfortable symptoms, and checking for improvements in the health of the retina following the use of treatment methods or medications. OCT test results provide a look at each layer of the retina, which allows for comprehensive mapping and measurement of its thickness. This test can help your eye doctor determine if issues like glaucomamacular degeneration, and diabetic eye disease are present. OCT testing can also detect changes within the optic nerve, which can be a potential indicator of other underlying conditions that would require treatment.

What to Expect from Ocular Coherence Tomography

OCT is a non-invasive and simple testing process, and Marano Eye Care works to ensure that patients are kept as comfortable as possible throughout any procedures or tests they pursue with us. The process does not cause any pain to patients and does not use any radiation or X-rays to create the images provided. For easy examination of the retina during OCT, the pupil must be widened through the administration of dilating eye drops before the test. This is followed by a short testing period where the patient is seated in front of an OCT machine, with their head kept still with a support device. Our OCT testing equipment will then scan the retina using light waves without ever touching the eye.
