All-Laser LASIK vs. Traditional LASIK: What Sets Them Apart?

But once you start researching the procedure, you may come across terms such as “all-laser LASIK,” “bladeless LASIK,” and “traditional LASIK.” What do these names actually mean?
Although both approaches use a laser to reshape the cornea and correct refractive errors, they differ in how the surgeon creates the corneal flap. Understanding that distinction can make your consultation more informative and help you feel more confident about your options.

Traditional LASIK
Traditional LASIK generally involves two main steps. First, the surgeon creates a thin flap in the cornea using a mechanical instrument called a microkeratome. The flap is then gently lifted, exposing the underlying tissue.
Next, your surgeon uses an excimer laser to remove microscopic amounts of tissue to reshape the cornea. This changes how light enters the eye, helping correct common refractive errors such as nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism.
Once the reshaping is complete, the surgeon repositions the corneal flap, where it naturally begins to adhere as the eye heals.
Despite the word “traditional,” this approach remains an established and widely performed type of LASIK.
The all-laser LASIK difference
The biggest distinction in these LASIK approaches is how we create the corneal flap. With all-laser LASIK, sometimes called bladeless LASIK, your surgeon uses a femtosecond laser to create the flap instead of a mechanical microkeratome.
The rest of the procedure is similar to other types of LASIK. After the flap is lifted, we use an excimer laser to precisely reshape the corneal tissue according to your prescription and treatment plan.
Using a laser for flap creation allows our surgeons to program specific flap dimensions, including its depth, diameter, and configuration. That level of control is one reason we favor the all-laser approach.
Does one provide better vision?
Both techniques can provide excellent visual outcomes in appropriately selected patients. However, the quality of the result depends on much more than the instrument used to create the flap.

Recovery and comfort

Because individual recovery varies, patients should follow their surgeon’s instructions carefully, including recommendations regarding eye drops, avoiding eye rubbing, swimming, and other activities.
