Start the New Year with Clear Vision: Is a PanOptix® Lens Right for You?
The PanOptix® intraocular lens (IOL) is designed to provide crisp, seamless vision at near, intermediate, and far distances.
It’s one of the advanced lens options our surgeons at Marano Eye Care, a division of Ophthalmology New Jersey, may recommend for individuals undergoing cataract surgery.
Here’s more from our team about how the PanOptix® lens works, who makes an ideal candidate, and what benefits you can expect. If you’re considering vision correction in the new year, this guide is a great place to start.
Intraocular lens basics
Cataracts occur when the eye’s natural lens becomes clouded, resulting in blurry and distorted vision that worsens as the clouding progresses.
During cataract surgery, your provider replaces the clouded lens with an artificial intraocular lens implant. This removes the visual distortions and overcomes vision loss caused by cataracts.
There are several types of IOLs available, including those that can correct refractive errors, such as nearsightedness or astigmatism.
What makes the PanOptix lens different?
While all types of IOLs can clear the cloudiness caused by cataracts, not all can address multiple issues. For instance, a monofocal IOL clears the cataract and can be set for distance vision, but you may require glasses for reading or other close work.
On the other hand, the PanOptix IOL is a trifocal lens engineered using cutting-edge technology, providing crisp vision at near, intermediate, and far distances. This can eliminate the need for additional glasses or contact lenses to correct common issues like presbyopia.
The enhanced intermediate vision available with the PanOptix lens improves your ability to use digital devices or view dashboards, activities that are a large part of modern life. Thus, whether you’re reading, using a computer, or driving, PanOptix can optimize your vision following cataract surgery.
Who is a good candidate for PanOptix?
Your Marano Eye Care provider may recommend PanOptix if you:
- Want greater independence from reading or computer glasses
- Struggle with a combination of refractive errors (i.e., nearsightedness and presbyopia)
- Lead an active lifestyle and frequently switch between visual tasks
- Have healthy eyes aside from cataracts
However, the PanOptix lens may not be the best choice for individuals with certain eye conditions such as significant macular degeneration, severe dry eye, or advanced glaucoma.
Our providers recommend IOL types based on a comprehensive eye exam and personalized consultation to determine the best option for your vision goals.
What results can I expect with PanOptix?
Most patients enjoy clearer vision almost immediately after surgery, with continued improvement as the eyes heal. You can also expect minimal dependence on glasses, even for tasks such as reading or detailed work.
Because every patient’s eyes and expectations are unique, results can vary. That’s why partnering with our experienced team is key to understanding what PanOptix can realistically offer.
