What to Expect on the Day of Your Consultation

  • The measurements are non-invasive and painless.
  • Plan to spend about 2–3 hours in our Livingston office for your consultation. During your visit:
    • We begin with a series of imaging tests to create a precise map of your eyes.
    • A technician will review your medical and vision history and take some additional measurements.
    • In most cases, plan to be dilated so the doctor can carefully examine the back of your eyes and confirm they are healthy enough for treatment.
      • Although dilation will cause your near vision to blur for 3-4 hours, your distance vision should remain intact enough to drive yourself home with caution and sunglasses.
      • If you are not comfortable doing this, we recommend you bring a driver with you.
  • After all testing is complete, the doctor will review the results with you and discuss how your unique eye, health, lifestyle, and goals fit with LASIK. Together, you’ll decide whether you are a good candidate and, if so, create a personalized treatment plan. If you’re ready, we can schedule your surgery at a time that’s convenient for you.

Preparing for Your LASIK Measurements

- No Contact Lenses: contacts temporarily change the shape of your cornea and can result in inaccurate measurements. It is vitally important to avoid wearing contacts before your consultation.

    • Soft contact lenses: stop wearing at least 1 week prior to your appointment
    • Hard or gas-permeable lenses: stop wearing at least 3 weeks prior to your appointment.

- No Eye Makeup & Lotions on day of testing - residue can interfere with imaging and increase the risk of irritation.

- Ensure Your Eyes are Well-Lubricated: use over-the-counter artificial tears 3–4 times per day in the week leading up to your appointment. If the cornea is dry or irritated, it becomes rough. To obtain the highest quality scans, your cornea should be as smooth as possible.

Am I a Good Candidate for LASIK?

Good Candidates:

    • Age: at least 21.
    • Stable Prescription: for at least 1 year, regardless of age.
    • Healthy Corneas: adequate thickness and regular shape (no keratoconus or irregularities).
    • Correctable Range: depends on corneal thickness and shape.
      • Nearsightedness: up to ~ –12.00 diopters
      • Farsightedness: up to ~ +6.00 diopters
      • Astigmatism: up to ~ 6.00 diopters
    • Good Overall Eye and General Health
    • Realistic Expectations:  LASIK can reduce or eliminate dependence on glasses or contacts, but does not guarantee “perfect” vision.

Poor Candidates:

    • Unstable Prescription: refractive surgery is not advised while the shape of the eye is changing (common in teens, young adults, or during pregnancy).
    • Thin or Irregular Corneas: significantly increases risk of complications while decreasing the amount of correction that can be achieved.
    • Severe Dry Eye Syndrome: can worsen after LASIK.
    • Very High Prescriptions: full refractive correction may be beyond the safe treatment range. LASIK could be used to reduce the amount of correction needed but would not eliminate the need for glasses.
    • Underlying Eye Conditions: diseases like macular degeneration or glaucoma can significantly limit the benefit of LASIK treatment to your overall vision.
    • Large Pupils: higher risk of post-operative glare, halos, and/or poor night vision.
    • Certain Medical Conditions:
      • Autoimmune Diseases
      • Poorly Controlled Diabetes
      • Medications that Suppress Healing
    • Pregnancy or Nursing: hormonal changes can temporarily alter vision.
    • High-Risk Lifestyle/Profession: sports or professions where eye trauma is likely.
